Clean Air Day is coming up on 20 June and we are very excited! Last year we were relatively new to this Clean Air campaigning malarky - now we’re all over it!.. and been invited to multiple events to mark the day (although one has been cancelled due to the pre-election period!) We note that the debate over whether it should actually be called ‘not yet Clean Air Day’ continues, which is reasonable given the ongoing issues we face in the UK, not to mention globally.
The focus of this year’s Clean Air Day (from our friends at Global Action Plan) is to ensure people can travel in ways that are better for our health and planet. This is a cause that resonates with us hugely! They have set up a Clean Air Day petition with accompanying Clean Air Hub where you can learn more about the air pollution problem caused by transport and what we can all do about it. This includes a repository of useful statistics and comparisons to encourage the move to cleaner travel; and there are lots of resource here for fellow campaigners.
We were excited to see an insightful interview with Air Quality News about the evolution of Clean Air Day over the past eight years. Meanwhile, Mums for Lungs are encouraging everyone to email in and state why we care about Clean Air Day. And Global Action Plan would love everyone to email them about what events they are planning. There is also a campaign by Possible for all of June to go Car Free for as many days as possible.
Days I’ll remember all my life
Which takes us onto the Day itself! The brilliant Breathe London groups are planning a wealth of events. From a Clean Air Day picnic in Mile End Park, to an Air Pollution Walk on 12 June in Kilburn; and from a market stall event at Middlesex University to a Faith and Peace Walk - our fellow Breathe London groups are really pulling out the stops!
So why haven’t we organised a Brixton event, we hear you cry? We have been a little busy - and in a good way! All last week we were supporting some doctors who are part of Ride for their Lives in their cycle to the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva to raise awareness of air pollution. We have been providing them with detailed air pollution data for each of their rides - sometimes up to 97k. All the data can be seen on Louise’s X account, with which she is now getting familiar! This was very timely as the WHA agreed unanimously on a new climate change and health resolution and to work towards the second air pollution and health global conference in Colombia in March 2025. Anyone have a spare sailboat?
'...Clean Air campaigning malarky...' - rather self-deprecating!
